Biography Chapman was born in Marion, North Carolina on November 18, 1909. He studied art in New York and worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, before moving to California (1945), where he started work as a set painter. Chapman moved to Arabia and worked as a painter in the oil industry (1951-56) and returned to the entertainment industry (1958), becoming known as "Handlebars" because of his rather large mustache.
